A fire that leaves the ground alone.

A fire built on the ground leaves a scorched ring behind and a pile of ash to deal with. Hearth lifts the fire about a foot into the air on a sheet of stainless steel mesh. The logs sit on the mesh, the ground underneath stays clear, and when the fire is out there is one thing to tip out and roll up. Heat still travels downward, so set it on bare soil, sand or gravel rather than dry grass or a wooden deck.

Mesh that lets the fire breathe.

The burning surface is a fine woven stainless steel mesh. Air comes up through it from below, which is what a fire in a solid bowl never gets, so the wood catches quickly and burns down more completely. The weave is tight enough to hold embers and most of the ash. The mesh will darken and change color the first time you use it; that is normal for stainless steel over a flame and does not affect it.

Four legs, crossed in the middle.

The frame is four stainless steel tubes that cross at a central joint and end in capped feet. The crossing keeps the legs from spreading, and the mesh pulls them together from the top. The manufacturer rates it for about 5 kg, or 11 lb, of firewood — an armful of split logs, not a bonfire. Build the fire in the middle and feed it a piece at a time.

Up in about a minute, no tools.

Take the legs out of the bag, swing the four tubes open until the cross locks, and stand it up. Then hook the steel ring at each corner of the mesh over the top of a leg. That is the whole assembly. Taking it down is the same in reverse, once everything has cooled.

Five setup steps: unfold the four legs, lock the cross, and hook each corner ring of the mesh onto a leg

It rolls up and goes in a bag.

The mesh rolls, the legs fold into a bundle, and both slide into the carry bag that comes with it — about the size of a rolled towel. The manufacturer lists the weight at around 960 g, roughly 2 lb. It lives in the trunk, and it is small enough that there is no reason to leave it at home.

Medium or large.

Medium has a mesh about 42 cm (16.5 in) square and stands 34 cm (13.4 in) high: right for two to four people and ordinary split firewood. Large is about 56 cm (22 in) square and 43 cm (16.9 in) high, for a bigger group or longer logs. Both pack into a bag about 10 cm across. You can buy one, a pair of the same size, or one of each: the small one for cooking and the large one for sitting around.

Medium size dimensions: mesh 42 cm / 16.5 in square, 34 cm / 13.4 in high, carry bag 25 by 10 cm

FAQ

Can I cook on it?
It is a fire pit, so it gives you the fire. It does not come with a grill grate, a tripod or cookware. You can cook over it with your own grate or a pot hung from a tripod, as in one of the pictures, but those are not included.

Will it protect the grass underneath?
It keeps the burning wood off the ground, but heat and the odd ember still fall through. Use it on bare soil, sand, gravel or stone. On a lawn, expect the grass underneath to scorch.

How much wood does it hold?
The manufacturer rates it for about 5 kg, or 11 lb. That is a small stack of split logs. We have not load-tested it ourselves, so treat that as the stated figure and do not pile it higher.

Does ash fall through the mesh?
The weave is fine enough to hold embers and most of the ash. Very fine ash can sift through, especially in wind.

The mesh changed color after the first fire. Is that a fault?
No. Stainless steel darkens and takes on a blue-brown tint over a flame. It is cosmetic.

How do I clean it?
Let it cool completely, unhook the mesh, tip the ash out and brush or rinse it. Dry it before rolling it into the bag.

Which size should I get?
Medium (16.5 in) suits two to four people and standard split firewood. Large (22 in) suits a bigger group or longer logs. They pack to nearly the same width; Large is a few inches longer in the bag.

Can I use it where there is a fire ban?
No. A raised fire pit is still an open fire. Check the rules for the campground or area before you light it, and keep water or sand within reach.
